All Shook Up! A Musical Comedy
Channel Elvis at Classical Academy High School’s student production of All Shook Up! Inspired by the songs of Elvis Presley, All Shook Up! combines the magic of romance with the power of rock and roll. Set in 1955 in a square little town in a square little state rides a guitar-playing roustabout who changes everything and everyone he meets in this hip-swiveling, lip-curling musical fantasy. It will have you jumpin’ out of your blue suede shoes with such classics as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Don’t Be Cruel.” Fri.-Sun. Event details.
Balboa Park After Dark
Keep the fun going after nightfall as Balboa Park comes alive after 5 p.m. on Fridays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Enjoy extended evening hours at eight museums, as well as food trucks and entertainment throughout the Park. Visit the following institutions until 8 p.m.: Japanese Friendship Garden, Mingei International Museum, San Diego Art Institute, Spanish Village, San Diego Museum of Man, San Diego Natural History Museum (theNAT), The San Diego Museum of Art and Fleet Science Center. Visitors of all ages are invited to celebrate spring amid the region’s most spectacular historical gardens at Fiesta Botanica: Celebrating Balboa Park’s Plants & Gardens. The family-friendly festival kicks off with the Fiesta Botanica Wagon Parade along El Prado. The festivities continue with horticultural-themed lectures and demonstrations, hands-on activities for kids, live entertainment, tours of the park’s historic gardens, four majestic butterfly releases and more. This year’s floral extravaganza will feature live entertainment by Hullabaloo and additional bands, open-air sketching stations provided by the Spanish Village Art Center, plant sales in the Casa del Prado, kids activities in Zoro Garden and a dozen food trucks parked along Village Place. Open Cockpit Days at Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum
Come sit in the cockpit of a plane like a real pilot! The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum has 27 vintage aircraft on display as well as hundreds of artifacts from World War I to present day. Select aircraft will be open for visitors to experience Marine aviation from a pilot’s perspective. Cockpits of select aircraft will be open 9:00 am-3:00 pm. Free admission and parking. The museum entrance is on Miramar Rd., 3.9 miles east of I-805 and 1.3 miles west of I-15. (Look for the Marine Corps and American flags at the entrance.) Sat. & Sun. Event details.
Get ready for a true Southern California experience! Observe hundreds of small silver fish called grunion ride the waves onto La Jolla beaches to spawn. Naturalists will highlight the fascinating lives of these mysterious fish, help you hatch grunion eggs before your eyes and then lead you to the beach to search for grunion in the wild. Prepare for cool, wet conditions and bring a flashlight. Minors must attend with a paid adult, for ages 6+. Please note: Grunion Runs do not meet at Birch Aquarium. Sun. Event details.
Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial Commemoration Ceremony
This Memorial Day, the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial commemoration ceremony will include a special salute to our nation’s Gold Star families. There will be a flyover by the San Diego Performance Formation Team, led by John “Flipper” Flippen. Mon. Event details.
Vista Strawberry Festival
The Vista Strawberry Festival will be a day filled with fun, food, multiple entertainment stages, bands, carnival rides and local craft beer in the beer garden and of course, strawberries! The event will also host over 300 local vendors to showcase their local products to the community. The festival will be held in Historic Downtown Vista, beginning with the early morning Strawberry runs. There are runs for children and all levels of adult runners. If running isn’t your thing, there will also be the Miss Strawberry Pageant, cooking contests, pie eating contests, costume contests, Strawberry Idol, local artists and much more. Sun. Event details.

The USS Midway Museum is the heart and soul of Memorial Day celebration in San Diego. The Legacy Week Memorial Day lineup of activities aboard the Midway honors and remembers America’s heroes as it celebrates the military heritage of the U.S.A. Weekend activities and events offer the community an affordable and inspiring way to kick off summer in San Diego and range from a wreath ceremony that includes a flyover, a freedom concert featuring the rock band Lifehouse, an adventure discovery zone for kids, a meet the aviators experience, live music, dance performances and much more.
