It’s Veterans Day weekend and there are plenty of patriotic events and fun activities on tap to enjoy the long weekend. MommyCon is in town, there’s a Sound of Music Sing-A-Long, and don’t miss the Veterans Day celebration on the USS Midway, plus much more. Read on for the scoop.

Mission Valley

MommyCon San Diego is a nationwide convention series dedicated to creating and nurturing a community of parents and parents-to-be in celebration of natural parenting. Seaport Village

USO’s Giving Tree Lighting Ceremony
USO San Diego officials and local military families will kick off the month of giving with a 35-foot tree lighting at Seaport Village’s open-air courtyard. “The Giving Tree” event, with sponsor the Headquarters at Seaport Village, features complimentary hot cocoa and candy canes, photos with Santa, a presentation of Colors, and a performance by The All American Boys Chorus. Additionally, visitors can get a jumpstart on holiday shopping with unique gifts from local boutiques such as United Streets of Art, Urban Beach House, and Dallmann Fine Chocolates. Guests are encouraged to bring toy donations to the Giving Tree lighting ceremony that will benefit more than 1,000 active-duty military families served through USO San Diego. From November 9 – December 18, members of the community are encouraged to drop off gifts for children up to 18 years of age and monetary donations for USO San Diego at the Giving Tree. Fri. San Diego River Estuary Clean-Up
Come join the Estuary Clean & Green event! The San Diego River Estuary is a critically important 330 acre wildlife area with habitat for many sensitive species, including endangered birds that nest in the estuary, like the Ridgway’s Rail and the California Least Tern. Please join us as we work to remove trash and debris from this unique habitat. We will be working on both sides of the river on a three-mile stretch from Dog Beach to the upper estuary near Friars Rd. This event is open to volunteers of all ages, but volunteers under the age of 16 must come with an adult. Closed-toed shoes are required. Sun protection, water and a snack are highly recommended. Thanksgiving Chocolate Making Class
San Diego’s colorful chocolate shop Sweet Petite Confections is celebrating our day of thanks with a “Thanksgiving!” themed chocolate making class. Secure your spot at this reservations-only class to learn the art of making fantastically flavored chocolates and bark over the course of two hours while creating nearly 1.5 pounds of confections. During this class, students will play with favorite flavors like salted caramel and peanut butter cup and select monthly flavors like warm hazelnut ganache and tart cranberry caramel made by chocolatier Michelle Lomelin. Students will also select from more than two dozen ingredients as they personalize a chocolate bark–with favorite flavors including freeze dried fruits and savory pretzels, potato chips and a wide selection of nuts. Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music
Back by popular demand, Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music, is a uniquely interactive film experience complete with prop packs, a costume contest, and themed cocktails and snacks! (Don’t worry; you don’t have to know all the words. Veterans Day Celebration on the USS Midway
Celebrate Veteran’s Day on the USS Midway. The museum is free to veterans, and open to the public. There will be live music, parade viewing, KidsZone, giveaways and much more. Sat. & Sun. Event details.

San Diego Veterans Day Parade
The San Diego Veterans Day Parade is a fun event for the entire family and the nation’s largest public parade of U.S. Armed Forces in uniform formations from all five military branches. The one-mile route runs down North Harbor Drive and features floats, military vehicles, marching bands, active and veterans military groups and more. Sat. Event details.
