It’s the first weekend of October and there’s no shortage of family fun to have! If you’ve been wanting to explore a San Diego museum or park, October is a great time to do it with Kids Free Month. Take a lesson in San Diego history and have fun at the annual Cabrillo Festival. Celebrate Oktoberfest in La Mesa and El Cajon. Or head to Balboa Park for the amazing Maker Faire where young scientists and engineers will have a blast. Have a great weekend!

Cabrillo Festival
The Cabrillo Festival features food booths with delicious traditional Mexican, Native American, Portuguese and Spanish food. Vendors will showcase their various artistic goods. The highlight of the Cabrillo Festival is the live re-enactment at 1 p.m. of Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo’s landing on the shores of San Diego Bay on Ballast Point. “Cabrillo,” his soldiers and a priest sail into the bay aboard the San Salvador (The Californian), and once again claim the land for Spain. San Diego Walk Now for Autism Speaks
This fun-filled, family-friendly event will help fund research, raise public awareness about autism and its effects on individuals, families and society. The event will include activities for children, entertainment, light refreshments and a resource fair. Sat. Event details.

Maker Faire
Maker Faire is a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It’s a place where people show what they are making, and share what they are learning. More than 200 local and regional makers will display their creations in Balboa Park, mostly inside participating museums. Sat. and Sun. Event details.

Pacific Beachfest 5K
Runners will move back onto the sand for the final quarter mile to the finish. All participants in the kids race will receive a tank top, sunglasses and finisher’s medal. Pacific Beachfest will also be hosting a pro surf competition, pro volleyball competition, loads of food vendors, kids’ activities, and more. Sat. Event details.

Kids Free in October

Pumpkin Festival Arts ‘n Crafts Fair
More than 80 artisans will be selling a variety of handmade crafts and fine art at the annual “Pumpkin Festival” Arts ‘n Crafts Fair.
