Despite SoCal’s warm temperatures, San Diego kids have plenty of opportunity to play traditional winter sports. Ice hockey is booming, with youth programs of all kinds. A great introduction is the Learn to Play program (ages 4-12) which loans equipment for free, then gives it to players who continue with the sport!

The next step for a little Gretzky is an in-house league (think rec soccer), in which teams throughout San Diego play each other, with a focus on basic skill development. More passionate players may choose club hockey (ages 9+), which includes play throughout California, travel tournaments and a higher price tag. For high school, players can stick with club or try a route with less travel and a more manageable schedule. A handful of blended high school teams exist, combining players from several schools. Only one San Diego school boasts a full hockey team: Carlsbad’s Pacific Ridge School. Pacific Ridge competes at the club level and helps students balance hockey with school work and other extracurriculars.
