With lazy summer mornings replaced by hectic “get everyone out the door” with two minutes to spare wake-up calls, we’re guessing you’ll need more than a cup of coffee to get your brood ready for the morning hustle. We spoke to savvy moms across the country to get their tips on how they conquer their mornings and get back into a groove once school starts. Read on for their tips and hacks, and then share what’s worked for your family in the comment section below.
1. Give Them Choices
Lisa Jackson empowers her kids to make their own choices in the morning. Get dressed or eat breakfast first? Brush teeth or put sunscreen on? By giving her kiddos choices, Lisa tells us that they’re more likely to quickly choose their marching orders and get everything done in time!
I don't know about you, but our morning hustle is a little nutty around here. To keep things running as smoothly as possible, one of my Back to School Morning Hacks is all about giving them choices (that I'm happy with too). For example, do you want to get dressed or eat breakfast first? (Lucas usually chooses getting dressed first and Theo always eats in his jammies). Brush your teeth or put sunscreen on? There are really only 5 things they have to do before we head out the door and if I give them a choice of the order they're completed in, they're more likely to quickly choose and get it done. Win Win 🙌 Cool shoes help too! 😜 What are your morning hacks to keep things moving? / #redtricycle #keenkids #boundlesswonder
2. Stay Organized & Prep the Night Before
A lot of the savvy moms we spoke to said that their #1 rule for conquering stressful mornings is to stay organized by packing or laying out everything their kids need the night before. We know it’s often easier said than done, but we love this idea. Read below for each mom’s take on this morning tip.
This made me giggle… Someone insisted on practicing looking out for the bus today… Which to be honest is an every morning occasion during the school year… We typically hit that 2 min scramble toward the end of our morning. Shoes brought down by the door and outfits picked out the night before are a must in our home… || #wearethehills #redtricycle #KEENkids #boundlesswonder @Keen.Kids @RedTricycle
We are one step closer to being ready for back to school. The kiddo has new shoes. Let's hope she doesn't grow out of these too fast. She grew TWO sizes during kindergarten. Two. 😳 Next up: we need to get back to our school routines. So far our mornings have been pretty laid back this summer. I want to know: do you have any back to school morning tips for getting out the door faster? We pick out our clothes the night before and hang them up by her bed. Getting dressed seems to take her FOREVER. What do you do? Photobomb brought to you by, Angus. #ad #redtricycle #KEENkids #boundlesswonder #thepapermamalife #anguschihuahua
STYLE BLISS: Hard to believe, but we're already starting back-to-school prep! Mornings can be CRAZY so we practice putting together outfits the night before and set *everything* out –including socks, hair accesories, and shoes. That way, in the early morning, kids just grab-and-go, no worrying about details. Although, my daughter LOVES these @KEEN.kids boots and wants to wear them everywhere, all the time, even in 80 degree heat… 🌞 so that makes the shoe prep part easy! 😉 What do you do to help #backtoschool mornings go smoothly? . . . #sponsored #redtricycle #KEENkids #boundlesswonder . . .
3. Give Them Their Own Shelf
Trial and error in her morning routine brought Dana Leigh to the realization that by giving her kiddos their own mud room shelf they’re able to keep the morning stress to a minimum. She tells us that each kid has his or her own shelf where all school supplies are kept, including backpacks, shoes, books and coats!
How is it August already? As much as I love summer, I'm a little excited to get back to our school routine! Even though it's not easy getting 5 kids ready and out the door, I've learned through trial and error how to have a (mostly) stress free school morning. 😉 My biggest sanity saver, other than coffee, is our mud room shelves. Each kid has their own shelf to store their backpack, books, coat, shoes (and socks!). I make my kids check their shelf the night before to make sure they have everything there that they will need for the next day! What are some things you do to make school mornings easier? I would love to hear! #redtricycle #KEENkids #boundlesswonder #ad
4. Play Tunes
Make your morning a dance party. With just the right tunes, your kids will be distracted by the lyrics and be moving and grooving in no time says Ken Kinzie and April Riehm. What songs would you add to your morning playlist?
With summer break coming to an end soon, it's time to start thinking about back to school and how to survive those chaotic mornings without going crazy. We like to play music in the mornings. 🎶 If you choose the right tune, pretty soon the kids are distracted by the rhythm & lyrics. Everyone forgets their worries for a moment and if you're lucky, they end up synchronized in some strange, lovely ballet. Right. Out. The. Door. 💃✨ What song would you guys play for your kids? #boundlesswonder #redtricycle #keenkids #sponsored
5. Learn By Doing
If you have two littles at home take some advice from Erin Kreitz Shirey: have them learn by doing. Her older one lines up her own shoes, lunch and bag at the door before she brushes her teeth. And now, her littlest one does, too!
"Learn by doing" was the Cal Poly motto that transferred to our house…with everything! Especially when getting ready for school. Emerson lines up her shoes, lunch and bag at the front door before she brushes her teeth. Now Finnie does too, which helps us prep to walk to school by 8:20 am! Goal for 2016-2017 school year- prepare early and get to school before the second bell! Little goals, right? With snazzy boots, these girls are eager to crush their morning routine!! What helps you get out the door in the school year? XO EKS #backtoschool #redtricycle #KEENkids #boundlesswonder
6. Designate School Shoes
Samantha McBride is all about designating one good pair of shoes just for school. That way her kids know what exactly they need to slip on their feet in the morning. Her extra bonus tip: Put ’em near their backpacks so it’s the last thing your kids do in the morning.
7. Be Efficient
When you have maybe a dozen things to get done in a 15-minute window, you need to multi-task and be efficient, says Kendra Stanton. While her kids chow down on their morning breakfast, she brushes their hair.
I am all about time efficiency when it comes to the whole 'back to school situation.' On school mornings we get dressed first- shoes and everything. Then, while they are eating cereal or drinking a smoothing, I do their hair. This saves me morning time drama. Oh- and future fines lines and wrinkles, so basically this is all anti-aging prevention if you think about it. . . . #redtricycle #KEENkids #boundlesswonder #ad
8. Ask Your Kids to Dress Themselves
If Junior doesn’t like what you picked out for her to wear, let her choose her own outfits. That’s what Sara Olsher does with her daughter. In fact, her daughter is even responsible for cleaning up the big pile of rejected outfits that inevitably end up on the floor.
It's hard to believe that we're already preparing for school to start again, but it's right around the corner. The number 1 thing that makes our mornings easier is having C choose her own outfits and get herself dressed, which she's been doing since she was 3! Sometimes she makes a big mess (see exhibit a: pile of clothes behind her), but that's her job to clean up too. ;) We are already preparing next month: she chose these awesome new boots from @keen.kids and a bunch of new leggings (including her favorite: these kitty faces!). #redtricycle #KEENkids #boundlesswonder
