The Christmas Pickle, while sometimes claimed to be of German or Scandinavian tradition seems to have originated in the United States. The pickle, which is not an actual pickle but an ornament shaped like a pickle, is hidden someone on the tree. The first child to spot it is blessed with good luck for the year, and in some families, awarded a small prize. Because it is green it can be tricky to spot. You can either hang it on a random day when no one is looking, and wait and see what happens or (better with very little ones at home) announce that its on the tree somewhere and let them look. You can make it your new Christmas Eve tradition!

Does your family practice the pickle tradition? Let us know if the comments!
