By now you may have heard that the Whole Foods rewards program is shutting down. Before the tears start flowing, hold on just a moment. Yes, the grocery retailer (which now falls under the Amazon empire) gave us customers some pretty rad perks. Along with the lower prices that Amazon brought with it, Whole Foods’ existing rewards program, digital coupons and online services were perks that just about everyone could use. And now they’re going away? What?
Okay, so technically the Whole Foods Market Rewards program no longer exists. The retailer phased it out and migrated their customers to online accounts and digital coupon use. After all, why carry around those pesky paper coupons that get lost in the depths of your diaper bag or tear more than easily (in your toddler’s tough little hands) when you could have a world of savings on your phone?

Shoppers had to download an app, choose favorite coupons and show the digital barcode to the Whole Foods Market cashier upon check-out. Easy. Right?
If you were all about the digital coupon option at Whole Foods, get ready for a change. Rewards program customers recently received an email, announcing the end of the program as of May 1. Even though it’s sad to see such an awesome perk go, the email also included a hint that the grocery retailer and Amazon are “cooking up” something new. Hmm. We’re on pins and needles waiting to see what they have in store for us.
