Kids are messy. They may be small. But their messes are so, so, sooooooo big. Come on. We’ve all been there. You’ve had a long day. And the last thing you want to do is clean up the sea of toys that used to be your living room floor. But you just can’t leave your home looking like it was struck by a toddler tornado. So you clean. And clean some more. Well, one mama is done with the whole cleaning up after her kids thing. And here’s why.

Heidi Hamm, posting on the Her View From Home Facebook page, says, “For years I would spend a few minutes every night, cleaning up after my kids. I would hate to calculate just how many hours of my life have been spent picking up toys. A heck of a lot.”

The same goes for many of us. Keeping Hamm’s home clean was just something she did — to feel more comfortable, more organized. Even though she was tired, she still felt the need to clean. That is until her husband asked, “Why don’t you just shut the door?” Hmm? Is that something we, as moms, can do?

Hamm, who expects the kids to clean their own play room (once a week), also notes that “Closing the door” is a form of self-care. And don’t we all need more of that in our lives?
