There are always tears at weddings. But the heartfelt sobs of this four-year-old boy clinging to his new stepmom as she exchanged vows with his dad are sure to make you tear up a little, too.

Joshua and Emily Newville — he’s a U.S. Marines Corps sergeant and she is an Air Force airman — dated for two years before getting engaged. Emily told CBS News’ 1010 Wins that she and Joshua’s 4-year-old son Gage had a “perfect” relationship and that she planned to read vows especially to him during the wedding ceremony.

“I wanted to involve him because when I was vowing to be Josh’s wife I was also vowing to be his stepmom. I wanted him to feel special and to remind him of how much he means to me,” she said in the news report.  “He had no idea that I had planned vows to him and at 4 years old I really didn’t expect him to understand what was going on but his emotions tell a different story!”

In the video, which has since gone viral, you can see Gage adorably breaking down as Emily reads the vows. “I want you to be safe, and to try your hardest to be a good person,” she says.

The little boy stares right into her eyes, then reaches for her, wrapping his arms around her and planting his face into her belly as she says tearfully, “Don’t cry, baby.”

The sobbing boy then turns to his dad, who keeps a comforting hand on his shoulders as she continues.

“I may not have given you the gift of life, but life surely gave me the gift of you.”
