Sleep. One of the biggest challenges of becoming a parent is getting enough of this elusive and much-needed commodity. Even when your kids finally stop bouncing off the walls long enough to allow you some shut eye, your massively growing to-do list, dust-collecting Netflix queue, and general worries about pretty much everything kid-related can leave you wide-eyed and unable to fall asleep. In case you need a little extra help, try one of these natural sleep remedies that are scientifically proven to help you sleep
like a baby like your husband.
1. Melatonin Supplements
Melatonin is a hormone that your brain naturally produces to help signal your body that it’s time to sleep. Certain behaviors, like scrolling through Facebook in bed, can interfere with your body’s natural production, which is when a supplement can be used to replace the lacking hormonal effect.
2. Valerian Root
If melatonin doesn’t do the trick, valerian root is another natural supplement that studies have shown to help people suffering from insomnia.
3. Chamomile Tea
A warm cup of tea is often a good remedy for winding down after a crazy day. Besides the comforting warmth and soothing scent, one recent study found that new moms who drank chamomile tea reported fewer symptoms of insomnia.
Studies have shown that the natural scent of lavender can have a calming effect on your body, which can, in turn, relax you enough to fall asleep.
5. A Noise Machine
While white noise can sometimes be recommended to help babies go to sleep, a new study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience suggests that pink noise, which is a mix of different sounds that is more natural than white noise, can also help lull you to sleep and help improve sleep.
6. Laying Down With Your Kids
Okay, so there might not be a scientific study to back this one up, but it’s pretty much a given that if you lay down with your kids in order to help them fall asleep, you’re guaranteed to pass out. The only downside is you’ll probably wake up in the middle of the night, starving from missing dinner, and you’ll be forced to use your stealthiest ninja moves to sneak out without waking your kid.
