A bigger home is certainly one of the largest investments you’ll ever make, but it can also be one of the best investments. Before you upgrade your living quarters, you’ll want to know the time is right. No place is big enough to last you forever, especially if you have kids. Start searching for the signs that something has to change soon if you want to hold onto your happiness (and perhaps your sanity, too).
1. Every Late Night Trip to the Bathroom Hurts
If you’re a parent, you know how much it hurts when your bare foot finds a toy in the dark. Kids are inevitably messy, but they’re even messier when they don’t have enough room for all their stuff. Toys spill out all over the place. If you find yourself stumbling and tripping, it may not be the fault of your children – maybe they’d be able to clean up a little better if they had space to store their toys.
2. Everybody’s Fighting
As kids grow older, their desire for privacy grows deeper. Sometimes, they just get tired of seeing each other and having to share everything. This often leads to big arguments over seemingly trivial things. When the kids are fighting like cats and dogs, they need a place to go where they can get away from each other. If they don’t have one, you could be in store for a lot more bickering.
3. You Need Bigger Furniture
A toddler bed might fit perfectly in your child’s room, but your child may not fit perfectly in a toddler bed anymore. It’s time to upgrade to a larger mattress, but where are you going to put one? Bigger clothes also require larger drawers. When you need bigger furniture but you can’t find a place to squeeze it in, you’re going to need bigger rooms.
4. You Have to Turn Guests Away
Sleepover parties for your children or having family over for dinner seems almost impossible. Where are you going to put everybody? If you’d like to entertain more often but it feels like a logistical nightmare, a bigger house may be your only solution.
5.You Wish You Had Some Privacy
There’s nothing unreasonable about wanting to take a long, relaxing bath once in a while. You can’t do that when there are little fists pounding on the door. Having enough bathrooms is just as important as having enough bedrooms. If you’ve ever had to wait in line outside the door with a towel in your hand, you’ll understand.
6. You Can’t Send Anyone Outside
You need peace and quiet once in a while, and your kids need to get some exercise. If you don’t have enough space for them to run around or they’re at the age where having some swings and play equipment at home would make things easier, you need more than just a bigger home – you also need a bigger yard. When you’re checking Gumtree, look for more than just the amount of bedrooms. Consider the size of the yard.
7. You Don’t Think You’re Done Yet
If you know you’re going to want to have another child in the near future, it’s never too early to start preparing. Children are expensive, and if you need a bigger home, it’s much more practical to handle that investment first. You’ll already be all settled in by the time your new little one arrives.
When you know you’re outgrowing your current home, it’s better to act sooner rather than later. Moving will only become more complicated the longer you wait, the more stuff you’ll accumulate to lug around with you. It’s better to start the process early.
