My son wants a guitar. Just the thought of that brings both excitement and concern to my wife and me.  Images of a young guitar hero fill my brain, while the fear of a noisy house brings a little worry to my wife.  Without a doubt, our family….dynamics….are sure to change with a guitar player under our roof.

As you can imagine, it was rather important to my son, and to the sanity of our family, that we find just the right guitar for the young musician.  Our aspiring rock star had an image in his mind of what he wanted.  What I needed to determine was if his dream guitar would be a good fit for the rest of the family.

I had a lot of factors to consider when choosing just the right guitar for a beginning guitar player.  Are there different sizes of guitars?  What size do I get him?  Is an acoustic guitar the best fit, or do we go with an electric guitar?  Perhaps most importantly, was he ready for a guitar? Of course, I already knew his answer for that question.  Perhaps the real question really is if our family was ready for a guitar player rocking our our household.

Yet, what my son was more concerned about was the appearance of his musical dream maker.   The string height, type of strings used, the neck, the truss rod.  These were all issues I had never considered simply because I knew nothing about these issues to begin with.  Clearly, I had my research cut out for me before purchasing our family’s very first guitar.  Yes, our family’s guitar.  Even though my son would be the one playing it, the rest of the family would be afforded the opportunity to hear him play!

I am excited for him. I am excited that he is about to venture into the wonderful world that is music.  Music opens up so many doors for a person, and is a gift that can stay with him far longer than any athletic opportunity.  Far after his body is unable to play sports at a competitive level, music is something that can stay with someone a life time.

For right now, though, we have to find the perfect life time gift for him.  We have to find the perfect guitar for our potential rock star.
