Move over, July. August is racing towards us and it’s packed a Costco-sized calendar of family fun. Whether you’re savoring the last weeks of summer vacation or staring the first day of school in the eye, you can get the most out of this weekend with a new production at the Center for Puppetry Arts, a design and programming workshop at MODA, a Sound of Music Sing-a-Long at the Fox, a soapbox derby festival, a train, truck, and tractor festival, and more.

Cool Dads Rock 3rd Annual Soapbox Derby Festival
Race on over to this awesome all-day fest complete with food trucks, music, activities and, of course, the soap box derby! Held at Historic Fourth Ward Park, 680 Dallas St. NE. Free to watch, $30.00 – $50.00 to register to race. Sat. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All ages to watch, ages 4 & up to race. Event details.

See the Pros at the BB&T Atlanta Open
Instead of making a racket in your living room, take your little tennis fans to Atlantic Station to see world-class players during the final days of the BB&T Atlanta Open. Design, Build, and Code Your Own Animals at MODA
Take your kiddos ages 8-12 to the Museum of Design Atlanta to learn basic circuitry. They can make a lion roar or light up the eyes of a dragon, and more! Held at Museum of Design (MODA), 1315 Peachtree Street NE. $30/ participant + 1 adult. Sat. from 2-2:30 p.m. Ages 8-12. Event details.

See The Reluctant Dragon at Center for Puppetry Arts
When a dragon moves into the neighborhood, a bookish boy, the soft spoken dragon, and a famous knight must use showmanship to stage a battle to calm the villagers’ fears. Held at Center for Puppetry Arts, 1404 Spring St. NW at 18th. $16.50, includes a build-a-puppet workshop. Tues-Fri: 10 a.m. & 12 p.m., Sat: 11 a.m., 1 & 3 p.m., Sun: 1 & 3 p.m. Ages 4 & up. Sing Along with The Sound of Music at the Fox
Don’t miss the chance to share the magic of The Sound of Music with your little yodelers at the Fox, where there’ll be singing (and concessions!). Held at The Fox Theatre, 660 Peachtree St. NE. $15. Sun. at 1 p.m. All ages (rated G). Event details.


Get Wet and Wild at the Chattahoochee Nature Center Water Day
Bring your camera for this cool and fun day all about water! What better way to learn than to play as you go. Bring your wet gear and get ready to play in the bubbles with The Amazing Bubble Show and their 12-foot sprinkler, make water-themed crafts, hear stories and more! Don’t Miss Southeastern Railway Museum’s Trains, Trucks and Tractors
If your wee one loves “things that go,” their engines will be revved for the Southeastern Railway Museum’s Trains, Trucks and Tractors event. Exhibits of tractors and trucks will excite along with hayrides, temporary tattoos, food and a craft corner. Held at Southeastern Railway Museum, 3595 Buford Hwy. $5 per child (ages 2-12), $8 per adult, children under 2 are free. Sat. and Sun. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All ages. Event details.
