No doubt cold temperatures and temper tantrums can leave you stuck between a rock and a hard place over things to do with the kiddos during the cold months. Instead of climbing the walls of your house, turn the wild ones loose at one of Atlanta’s family-friendly climbing centers. Better than a bounce house for wearing them out, let one of the following rock walls rock your world in 2014.
In addition to 12,000 square feet of seamless climbing walls and daily free climbs, Atlanta Rocks! offers families special deals and designated climbing times every Wednesday. On Family Day, one parent climbs free with each paying kiddo ($20 for the first family member under 18, and additional kids climb for $15 each). The best part? You don’t have to be Tom Cruise in Cliffhanger to spend a day at the wall. Atlanta Rocks! has supervising staff members to assist you and the crew while you climb. Interested in taking a class with the family to get the most out of your experience? Reserve your spot every Wednesday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the Family Climbing Class ($50 per family, up to five family members).

Stone Summit Climbing & Fitness Center
First, you should know that this place is ginormous. Next, you should know that while the kids are climbing, you can find your zen in the yoga studio that’s part of the package. If that’s not reason enough to go, then consider this: they offer staff-assisted climbing (reservations required), they have auto-belays (which matter if you’re not sure your 9 year old is really qualified to dangle your 7 year old off a cliff responsibly), and finally, there is a dino-slide. You can access all of this for the price of a day pass for kids 12 and younger ($15).

Wall Crawler Rock Club
We all know our kids trust us, even though sometimes we might not feel entirely in command of a situation (i.e. belaying your short stack down the face of a rock wall). The good news is that parents of kids ages 4-6 are invited to take a free belay course (by appointment) before rigging up those tiny harnesses and taking to the high terrain. And, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Thursday, you and the preschoolers can tackle the wall in an organized, instructor-led climb.

Escalade Rock Climbing Gym
Ditch your babysitters on Friday and Saturday nights from 6-9 p.m. and take the family out for a climbing date instead. Complete with pizza for dinner and all the equipment you and the kiddos need to climb a rock wall, Family Night ($18 per person) is a perfect opportunity to show your kids what you’re made of while you scale a vertical plane.

Geared more towards the competitive climber, this gym also offers excellent beginner training that focuses on the fundamentals of climbing. For $75 per month (or $50 per month for 4-6 year olds), Rec Club Memberships include unlimited climbing access, some equipment, and an instructional class each week (Sundays for kids ages 4-6). Or, for a drop-in fee of $18 on Friday nights from 6-8 p.m., you and the family can hit the center for a little guided climbing instruction and (drumroll) pizza!
