The dull selection at the local CVS can only go far when you’ve got a true sugar craving, whether it’s for a retro treat you remember from your youth, or for good-quality chocolate, or for the pleasure of picking a selection from an old-fashioned penny candy jars (though, admittedly, a penny doesn’t buy what it used to when it comes to candy!). We rounded up some of our favorite places to buy sweets of every stripe around Atlanta.
You can watch the candymakers dip and drizzle yummy confections right in the window of this Atlantic Station shop, Georgia’s only outpost of the 66-year-old Michigan chain. And you’ll find just about anything you could desire dipped in chocolate or caramel (or both): rice crispy treats, marshmallows, Oreos, chocolate chip cookies, apples, and pretzels, to name a few. In the glass display cases are dizzying varieties of fudge, truffles, caramels and chocolate bark, and you can also find foil-wrapped chocolates, caramel corn, nuts, giant lollipops, flavored candy sticks, and even sugar-free candies.
Even sweeter: In the summer, it’s a great place to grab a post-movie ice cream.

River Street Sweets

Follow your nose in Phipps Plaza: the sweet smell of cooking sugar will lead you right to this Savannah-based confectioner, where you can pick up pralines (made right on premises), divinity, chocolate-covered pecans and other Southern treats. Must-haves for the kids: skewers of white chocolate-covered marshmallows decorated with sprinkles, or chocolate-dipped cookies.

Greene’s Fine Foods
This airy, green-and-white Decatur shop has one of the best candy assortments we’ve found in the Atlanta area. You’ll find Jelly Belly assortments both boxed and by the pound; little sacks of chocolate-covered goodies like raisins, dried cherries, nuts and coffee beans; a big display of Pez dispensers, a carousel of Pucker Powders to custom-fill fat plastic straws; and boxes of flavored nuts. In the big glass display cases, you can choose from tempting bonbons, lemon drops, fruit slices and chocolate-covered Oreos, potato chips, toffee and Nutter Butters. Pails of gummy candies line the top of the display case, and if that’s not enough of a sugary selection, you can also buy ice cream by the scoop here.
Even sweeter: your kids’ sugar high is a little too much to take, Greene’s Growlers next door has a great selection of beer.
141 E. Trinity Place, Decatur

My Fair Sweets
Open only about a year and a half, this cute little storefront tucked into a Northside Parkway shopping strip is known for its “cupcakes in a jar”, but it also has a small but well-executed selection of candies. Tempting choices include chocolate nut clusters, cake pops, chocolate-dipped fruit skewers and chocolate-covered pretzels. Among the non-chocolate confections are giant handmade marshmallows in plain and strawberry flavors, pretty rock candy, and flavored candy sticks.
Even sweeter: My Fair Sweets does parties! The proprietor will set up a candy bar at your event, or you can have your party there, and guests can create and decorate their own treats.

Maison Robert Fine Chocolates
Any old-school Atlantan knows that one of the best places to buy a box of chocolates is at this Chamblee institution, where Robert Reeb, a 3rd-generation pâtissiers-confiseur and his wife Patricia, have been making classic confections since 1977. Their elegant assortment includes truffles of various flavors, fondant bonbons, shaped marzipan animals, Florentines, and more. An unusual must-try is the Mendiant, a dark chocolate confection that includes curried pecans, dried cranberries, pistachios, ginger and a dusting of sea salt.
Even sweeter: Keep Maison Robert in mind for holidays; they specialize in seasonal items and gift packaging for Valentine’s Day, Passover, Easter, and Christmas.
