Perfectly portioned, cupcakes are always a hit with the small set. That oh-so-sweet and yummy treat once reserved for birthdays and special occasions is all the rage and now an everyday treat if you so desire. And if you’re a kid (or a kid at heart), chances are you do desire one every chance you get. Luckily, you can find cupcakes everywhere now. However, the kind of cupcakes we’re talking about are the crème de la crème. We’re talking quality ingredients, artisan touches and a variety of gourmet flavors. We think these Atlanta sweet spots really take the cake:
Atlanta Cupcake Factory
One of the first cupcake boutiques in Atlanta, Atlanta Cupcake Factory was on the forefront of the cupcake craze. It’s been recognized locally and nationally for its über-delicious cakes. Located in a simple little storefront in Poncey Highland, it’s easy to miss. If you drive past, turn around and go back because you don’t want to miss what’s inside. Flavors change each week and are inspired by the season. Favorites include the spicy Chocolate Diablo, Key Lime and classic Red Velvet. Be forewarned, you’re going to have a hard time deciding on just one flavor to try.
What we’re sweet on: The icing! The specialty here is cream cheese frosting. It’s the featured icing on all of their cupcakes and offers the perfect balance of sweet and tangy.
Takes the cake: The Sugar Cookie Salted Caramel Cupcake is a mainstay—and for good reason. Also look for the Sugar Cookie Nutella!
624 North Highland Avenue NE, Atlanta, Ga 30306
With locations in Buckhead and Vinings, this small Jacksonville, Florida based chain has quickly made a name for itself in Atlanta. Their cupcakes have been voted “best in Atlanta” by Creative Loafing and other local publications. CamiCakes are moist, flavorful and piled high with creamy icing. If you want to keep it simple, try the Classic Cami (with pink buttercream icing) or the Classic Cami Chocolate on Chocolate. Other favorites include CinnaSwirl and Chocolate Raspberry Almond Cream.
What we’re sweet on: The eye appeal and variety of flavors sets CamiCakes apart. There are at least 15 regular flavors and several rotating (many seasonally inspired) flavors offered each day.
Takes the cake: The Elvis: rich chocolate cake topped with creamy banana and peanut butter frosting and a drizzle of chocolate. It may just leave you “all shook up!”
2221 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, Ga 30309
4338 Paces Ferry Rd SE, Atlanta, Ga 30339
Endulge Cupcake Boutique
This small Ormewood Park cupcake shop is one of the best kept secrets in town. First of all, their cupcakes are delicious, they have a lovely seating area, and they have a drive-thru window for cakes on the run. Small batch baked daily, they offer 10 or more varieties each day. Some flavors like Salted Caramel and Red Velvet are offered daily. Others vary with the seasons. In the fall, don’t miss Sweet Potato Cheesecake and Caramel Apple!
What we’re sweet on: The friendly owners and comfy ambience make it a nice place to hang out. They also host kid birthday parties!
Takes the cake: The Salted Caramel with caramel filling. It’s a regular and always in high demand. (We kind of love caramel, can you tell?)
749 Moreland Ave, Suite A-101, Atlanta, Ga 30316
Founded just five years ago in Nashville, Gigi’s has grown into a national franchise with over 80 locations. There are five in the metro Atlanta area alone. If you are skeptical of chains, never fear. The cupcakes here do not have a mass-produced chemical taste. All of the shops are locally owned with cupcakes baked in house. Gigi’s has also won local and national awards for their moist cupcakes and inventive flavors. Flavors change daily and are posted on the website. They also make mini-cheesecakes!
What we’re sweet on: If you like lots of icing, Gigi’s is for you. Their creamy, sweet buttercream or cream cheese icing is piped on high and thick. Yum!
Takes the cake: Cookie lovers can’t resist the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. The German Chocolate — filled with caramel, coconut and pecan filling and topped with chocolate cream cheese frosting — is pretty awesome too.
3655 Roswell Road, Atlanta, Ga 30342
Other metro Atlanta locations: Sandy Springs, Marietta, Peachtree City and Norcross. For specifics, visit Gigi’s website.
Sugar Moon Bake Shop
This sweet little cupcake shop in Decatur’s Oakhurst Village is the new kid in town. However, it’s quickly making a name for itself for its scratch-made cupcakes and giant cookies. The feel here is down-home and simple. The cupcakes have a nice texture and homemade flavor. And we mean good homemade –like Grandma just pulled them out of the oven and frosted them with care. There are a few cozy tables to enjoy your treat or you can sit outside and enjoy them with a cup of coffee or cocoa from the coffee shop next door.
What we’re sweet on: Some say these cupcakes have just the right icing to cake ratio. If you’re a fan of “less is more” when it comes to frosting, then you will dig these!
Takes the cake: The Banana Pudding Cupcake. It’s filled with banana pudding and topped with ‘Nilla wafer crumbs. Yum!
707C East Lake Drive Decatur, Ga 30030
