Are you a member of the SoulCycle nation? Here at Red Tricycle, we’ve seriously fallen in love with their fast-paced, high-energy workouts. Each spin session never fails to give us that “burns so good” sore feeling, and the inspirational instructors keep us pushing to the bitter end of each workout. We chatted with NYC-based instructor and fellow mom Erika Shannon to find out about her fitness routine, tips and tricks on staying fit, and more.

RT: Tell us a little bit about your workout routine beyond SoulCycle. Do you ever participate in mommy and me classes or any sort of fitness routine with your child?
Erika Shannon: I do! I take Anna (11 months) to a baby tumbling class at Mimi Kids Yoga in Hoboken—she LOVES to go upside down and crawl around with abandon. We start with simple baby-fied yoga poses and breathing, hit the peak of excitement with forward and backward rolls and balancing exercises, and end with lots of bubble blowing and footsie rubs. It’s precious. When I’m not teaching at SoulCycle or chasing Anna around, I love to take dance class and balance out my cardio party with weight training. In a perfect world I would also take more yoga.

So many of our readers have the desire to work out, but after carpools, making dinner and bedtime, the motivation dwindles. Do you have any advice for busy moms trying to squeeze in quick workouts? Is there anything they can do in their own home?
It is HARD to squeeze in a workout when you are a mom—if I don’t get it done in the morning, it’s not going to happen. My advice is KNOW YOURSELF. If you’ve never worked out at night, you probably won’t start now, especially after your busy day. I have a lot of new moms in my SoulCycle classes because you can get in, get out and get a full body workout in just 45 minutes.

Beyond staying fit, how do you practice a healthy lifestyle? Do you have any favorite recipes you’d like to share?
I am a lifetime member of Weight Watchers, and just lost the rest of my baby weight by buckling down and following the plan again. It is awesome and it works. I admittedly let my husband do most of the cooking, but I make sure to use my measuring cups and my trusty Weight Watchers scanner app to make sure I track my food with integrity.

Let’s talk products and gear. Any specific recommendations for fitness products and gear?
Well, clearly I love my SoulCycle apparel. It’s the cutest, most stylish, most fun and functional workout gear and makes me feel like a rockstar. I especially like the Nike Pro spin tights!

If we took a peek inside your workout bag, what would we find?
You’d find my cycling shoes, extra socks and undies, my Rosebud Salve and Bobbi Brown lip palette (can’t teach without some lips, you know?), an assortment of hair accessories (including a Sparkly Soul headband or two), bottled water, a pen (always need a pen for something!), my iPod and headphones, and usually some Weight Watchers friendly snacks to nibble on between classes. And an extra Ziploc bag or two. I swear if I were banished to a desert island and could only take 2 things, it would be my Rosebud Salve and Ziploc bags.

What songs do you listen to to get pumped up?
Here are a few!
Black and Yellow (Wiz Khalifa) – love my Steelers!
Gypsy (Lady Gaga)
Still Into You (Paramore)
Gravel (Ani DiFranco)
Conceited (Remy Ma)
