Barbie has had a lot of jobs, and a lot of looks. The iconic doll has been an astronaut, an architect, an engineer and now an Olympic fencer. This isn’t exactly the first time Barbie has been an athlete. But there is another first here — she’s modeled after Muslim-American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad.
We all know what to expect when we hear the word, “Barbie.” Blond hair, blue eyes, long legs and…umm, a figure that only a very talented plastic surgeon could create on an actual human. But in recent years, Barbie has gotten a few different makeovers. And this one is a major first.
The Barbie Shero doll isn’t just wearing a fencing outfit, she’s also wearing a hijab. In response to the doll, which she received at the Glamour Women of the Year LIVE Summit, Ibtihaj Muhammad tweeted, “I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true.”
The new fencing, hijab-wearing Barbie is taking its place in the doll’s “Shero” (get it, she- hero) line. According to Mattel’s website, “Barbie recognizes Sheroes — female heroes who inspire girls by breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for women everywhere.” Other Sheroes include Gabby Douglas, Ava DuVernay, Ashley Graham and Misty Copeland.
