Red Tricycle: Congratulations! Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome.” What do you think your customers value most about your business?
Jahje Ives: We create handmade products and I often hear that the quality of the work was beyond what the customer expected—which makes me so happy. I take pride in the fact that Baby Jives Co mobiles are all made one at a time in my small Philadelphia studio. It’s a true cottage industry creating wonder for one customer at a time.
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
JI: I got bit bad by the nesting bug when I was pregnant with my first child, whom we had nicknamed “baby Jives”. I looked everywhere for the perfect mobile and when I couldn’t find one I decided to make my own. So it began. Baby Jives Co now is focused on the creation of modern heirloom mobiles inspired by the magic of childhood. I believe the things we surround our children with should be as imaginative as they are and seek to infuse my mobiles with a bit of that wonder. My background is in painting and sculpture so I often think of the mobiles as props or sculptures. I tend to pay attention to the smallest detail and want to make works that can grow up with a child or simply exist in any home to inspire.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
JI: To make your mark, you must find your own voice. I think about that every time I sit down to design something. If I have an idea, I often look at what’s out there and try to make sure it’s not out there yet. I don’t want to be part of the pack, I want to lead it.
RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?
JI: I am still trying to figure this out. I think the most important thing I’ve learned while balancing my family with my business is to define what my priorities are. Right now my family is young and I know that my kids will grow up far too quickly so I choose very carefully what I take on so that I will still be able to enjoy this time with them.
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?
JI: This year my son started Pre-K and a few weeks after school started his teacher told me how much she loved his creativity. She told me about how one day she was asking each child what their favorite color was and Gav’s answer was, “Whale color – you know it’s kind of a blueish gray purple” Hearing that he carried his creativity outside of our home made me so proud as a parent because I felt like he was comfortable enough to always be himself. I hope that never changes.
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
