When you have kids at home, park access is at the top of your list of must-have amenities for picking an ideal place to live. The Trust for Public Land just released their annual rankings of the cities with the best public parks and there are a few new spots breaking the top ten.
Once again Minnesota took the top two spots with Minneapolis at number one and St. Paul at two and several of the same cities were in the top ten. There were a few changes in the cities from previous years, however, and one new city, Chicago, squeaked its way in for the first time.
The Trust for Public Land compiles an annual list of the top major cities in the country for parks. The Trust bases its rankings on three factors: accessibility, acreage and facilities. The accessibility is factored by the percentage of the city’s population living within a ten-minute walk to a park.
The top ten cities with the best parks in 2018, according to the Trust for Public Land, are:
- Minneapolis, MN
- St. Paul, MN
- Washington, DC
- Arlington, VA
- San Francisco, CA
- Portland, OR
- Cincinnati, OH
- Chicago, IL
- New York, NY
- Irvine, CA
Unfortunately, according to the Trust, one in every three Americans lacks easy access to a park. However, there is hope and an example for cities hoping to add more green space. While the majority of these cities have been in the top spots for years, it’s the first time for Chicago thanks to the city’s efforts at improving park access and opening schoolyards to the public on weekends.
