Kids are messy. So are homes with kids. And that’s OK!
That’s the message blogger Nicole Johnson wanted to get across in a recent Facebook post in which she explains how she’s gone from clean-freak to chill mama after realizing that paying attention to her kids was more important than keeping her house picture-perfect.
“People used to always comment on how clean my house was,” the mother-of-four wrote. “What they didn’t see was the lunatic who stressed to get it that way.”
In her post, Johnson, who runs the blog Suburban Sh*t Show: Tales from the Tree-Lined Trenches, explains how she grew up in a house where cleanliness “meant you were worthy” and how this model of perfection carried over into her home as an adult — until life with four kids set in.
“I could spend every second ignoring the kids, ignoring my writing, ignoring my life and obsessing over it,” she wrote. “I have decided not to. I don’t want the stress or the pressure.”
She ends the post with:
“Here is a picture of my house. It is a corner filled with dust that I forgot about while hanging with the kids this summer. I kind of like it. In fact, I’m thinking I’ll let it hang there for a bit, as a reminder of what’s important and what’s not.”
The post has made the rounds on mom blogs and a few parenting sites, with supporters sharing their own (un)clean house stories as a show of solidarity for the busy mom.
