Are you thinking about potty training your toddler? It’s a big step for kids (and their parents!) There are so many different approaches out there and while there’s not a “one size fits all” method, there are definitely tips and products that can help you have a smooth and successful experience! Hopefully this Potty Training Guide will save you time as you take the leap into the diaper-free world!

We followed the Oh Crap Potty Training method and started over a three-day weekend. My daughter was just almost 2.5 years old and she could clearly communicate to us when we started. Make sure you can devote your full attention to this, because it can be physically and mentally demanding! Although you can potty-train any time of year, it might be easier during the warm-weather months, since your child will be wearing less clothing.

We read several children’s books about potty training with my daughter. We also watched the Daniel Tiger potty training episode and she loved singing the “potty song” when she had to go.

The Oh Crap book encourages having child-size potties around, so that your child can use it without a step stool or help from an adult. In addition to the child-size potties, we also had this soft potty seat that’s placed directly on top of the toilet seat.

After the first week or two of going “commando” during potty training (as per this method), we gave our daughter her first set of new big-girl underwear. We got her really pumped up so she’d be excited about it! I like these training underpants because they are thicker than your normal underwear. In case your child has a small leak, it won’t completely soak through.

For naps and night, you may want to start out with pull-ups just in case your child has an accident. Unlike diapers, the pull-ups can be pushed down and pulled up just like underpants.

This collapsible travel potty comes in handy when you’re not near a bathroom! Just bring it with you for easy access to a potty wherever you are. Simply insert these disposable bags or use a plastic shopping bag and dispose of it after your child is done.

You’ll want a step stool for your child to sit on the adult toilet and reach the sink to wash their hands without your help.

I hope these tips and products are helpful and that your potty training experience goes smoothly!

Perfect for all the Daniel Tiger lovers out there. We also watched some video clips on Youtube and the full episode (Season 1 Episode 11) about Daniel Tiger learning to use the potty. The catchy song became our family’s motto: “If you have to go potty, STOP, and go right away… flush and wash and be on your way!”
