Many Star Wars fans awoke with a stunned realization on Wednesday morning: It’s been an entire year since Star Wars legend and all-around bad*ss feminist icon Carrie Fisher left this mortal coil. On Twitter, hundreds of thousands of fans reflected on how Carrie Fisher inspired them when they were kids, adding #CarrieOnForever to their tributes.

The Last Jedi co-star Mark Hamill, who has played the Princess Leia’s equally iconic twin brother Luke Skywalker for the past 30 years, offered his simple tribute on Twitter Wednesday: “No one’s ever really gone,” he wrote, adding #CarrieOnForever and #AlwaysWithUs.

Fans spoke about how the character of Princess Leia often served an empowered female role model.

But as many fans noted on Twitter, Fisher’s inspirational power wasn’t just limited to the Galaxy. For many, Fisher’s very public struggle with mental illness and addiction was just as empowering to them growing up.

Despite the sadness at the first anniversary of Fisher’s death, it’s clear she left an inspiring and indelible mark on so many.

Whether she played a galactic princess, a rebel general or even Jake’s crazy ex-fiancée in Blues Brothers, Carrie Fisher will always be our Space Mom.
