‘Tis the season for some celebrity Secret Santas! While we totally adore our fave celebs for their excellence in the arts and music, we also really love seeing heartwarming stories where they give back to people in need during this season of giving.
Tyler Perry and Kid Rock recently made headlines when they generously paid off the entire stock of layaway items at their local Walmarts, and excuse us while we grab the tissues! While Perry originally didn’t expect any acknowledgment (he tried to do it anonymously), he ended up inspiring Kid Rock to do the same. Between the two of them, they paid off over $515,000 worth of layaway items!
Perry and Rock are just the most recent of a long list of celebs who give back. Television host Glenn Beck also gifted $27,000 worth of layaway items at his local Walmart in North Richland Hills, Texas and left each customer with just a $.01 balance. He says he was hugely inspired by the generosity of both Perry and Rock and that his experience was extremely humbling.
While we haven’t heard news of a holiday gift, over the course of her career, Taylor Swift has been largely recognized for her ongoing gifting to fans and organizations in need. The pop star has donated money for books, student loans, NYC schools, survivors of sexual assault—and this past October donated $10,000 to go towards a service dog for an autistic boy.
In the spirit of the holidays, we took a look back at some of the most generous celebs out there:
Chance the Rapper raised over $3.2 million for Chicago Public Schools in 2017.
J.K. Rowling has donated over $160 million to charitable causes, which resulted in her being removed from the Forbes billionaire list.
Elton John has donated over $38 million to organization fighting HIV/Aids.
Oprah has long been known for her philanthropic efforts. She donated $10 million to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and she spent $50.2 million on education, health care, and advocacy for women and children worldwide—and that was just just in 2007!
Ellen DeGeneres‘ Oscar selfie raised $3 million, which she then donated $1.5 million each to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and The Humane Society.
John Legend once paid off $5,000 in school lunch debt for 99 Seattle schools, in addition to several other organizations he’s involved with to further education.
We can’t wait to see how else celebrities will impact others this holiday season.
