These are unprecedented times, with school, event, shop and in-person dining closures. Your weekdays are likely packed full of homeschooling, working and just, in general, trying to develop a new temporary normal. But, with widespread cancellations, it can hard to maintain creativity in planning family togetherness. Check out this list of local options, as well as at-home activities, that will keep everyone focused on the fun.

Family Activities

Have a Family Movie Date Night
Last weekend we told you to intro your kids to Ferris Bueller, so this week throwback to another Chicago-based favorite: Adventures in Babysitting. Much was filmed in Toronto, even though it was set in Chicago, but you can still see some familiar Chicago locations. You’ll notice the I-90/94, I-290 and the distinctive Smurfit-Stone building located at 150 N. Michigan Ave. Don’t forget the popcorn!

Make a Musical Instrument
There’s no better time than now to start a family band. Guide your kids through making their own musical instruments. They can have a blast banging on tin can drums, shaking DIY maracas and more. Let’s get this party STARTED!

Get Your Game Face On
Bust out that board game still in its wrap since Christmas, try one of these games with LEGO bricks or send them outside for some backyard time with these yard games. Everyone loves a little friendly competition!

Have an Indoor Picnic
It’s no secret that Chicagoans love a good hot dog, sans ketchup, of course. Try a new hot dog recipe, spread out a blanket in the living room and enjoy a low-key (and cheap) dinner.

Don’t Scrap the Scrap Paper
We might be all out of toilet paper, but we all have scrap paper, so why not put it to good use with one of these upcycle projects. You can make a card to send to the grandparents, decorate your room with a paper garland and make bookmarks for all those books you’ll be reading this week.
