Chicago is ready to flip the switch. You’ll hear oohs and aahs when streets, shopping centers and parks light up for the holidays — and you can be there when it happens. If you can’t make the kick-off ceremonies, don’t worry: these hotspots will stay brilliantly lit through the end of December. Click through our guide to the best and brightest.

Macy’s State Street Great Tree

Gathering around the Great Tree at Macy's (formerly Marshall Field’s) has been a holiday pastime in Chicago for generations. The 108th tree lighting ceremony has already taken place in historic Walnut Room restaurant. Start your tradition by peering into the decorated holiday windows along State St., followed by lunch under the glow of the tree and wrap up with a visit to Santaland.
