Will you choose the horse? The lion? The seal? Whatever animal you nab on the merry-go-round you’re going to have a whirling, twirling good time. Carousels are pure, nostalgic fun, but you can’t find them just anywhere — and that’s part of their charm. Flip through our album to discover the must-rides, from vintage roundabouts to serious double deckers.
For a Good Cause: Brookfield Zoo
Serving as the focal point inside the main entrance of the zoo, the Brookfield Zoo Carousel is the largest non-restored wood carousel in the country. Installed in 2006, the 72 animals and three stationary chariots were hand carved from basswood and meticulously hand painted over a 16-month period. Whether you prefer mammals, birds, insects, reptiles or amphibians, you'll be thrilled with the animals (look for anteaters, ladybugs, hippos, tortoises, flamingos and more!). Hop on your favorite in the menagerie and the proceeds from the $2.50 fee support animal conservation and educational programs at the zoo and sustain international conservation efforts.
