Good news for budding actors: Little Theatre has come to town. The nation’s first theater devoted to the very young is a sibling of Chicago’s long-loved Emerald City Theatre Company. Catering to kids ages newborn to 4, it offers summer camps, performances, birthday parties and classes, sending tots down an imaginative path before they’re even out of diapers. This summer, programming kicks off with camps for kids ages 3 1/2 to 5 years old; themes range from Princess & Knight to Pirates & Mermaids to Superheroes and feature creativity-sparking games and movement exercises. Come September, the theater will mount “Teddy Bears’ Picnic,” a joyful show that breaks the norm by having kids sit on blankets, instead of seats. In addition to being a cool place to be introduced to stage antics, Little Theatre is a delight to look at, with decor designed by The Land of Nod and artist Julia Rothman. The Little Theatre lobby was designed by The Land of Nod as a gathering spot for families waiting for summer camp or a show to start. An emerald green floor and fixtures are bright references to the journey to Oz.
