Oak Park is known for its Frank Lloyd Wright house. Now, it can be known for its fun house. Peekaboo Playroom, a 2,500-square-foot play space for the five-and-under crowd, just opened on Marion Street.

The roomy, sun-dappled oasis is set up like a mini city with several interactive areas to explore, from a veterinarian’s office to a grocery store. While kids zip around in toy cars, tinker with a train table and just cut loose, parents and caregivers can kick back on the couch or join the unplugged fun.

The Setup
Owners Cindy Alvear and Ana Schreiner are former schoolteachers, and their love of creative playtime and education shines through in Peekaboo Playroom’s clever design. They had five kid-sized houses custom-built and installed along one wall to give everything the look of a cheerful city. Not only that, but they modeled the houses’ architecture after that of Oak Park (think shingled homes with arched doorways and a brick firehouse).

Duck into the veterinarian’s office to do faux X-rays and examine plush animals. Pretend you’re a tune-up pro in the garage stocked with tools and a workbench. Grab a grocery cart and shop for pretend milk, fruit and meat in the store. Put on a fireman’s hat, grab a hose and make like you’re saving the day in the firehouse. There’s no limit to where your imagination can go.

The Extras
In addition to the re-created city buildings and the fun discoveries therein, the playroom is equipped with a train table, Lego table, dollhouse and sensory table that changes with the seasons. Busy beavers can wind down with a puzzle or read in the book nook. And even babies can get in on the action; there is a blocked-off padded area especially for pre-walkers.

The Parent Perks
An open lounge area invites parents and caregivers to relax with clear views of the playroom, should you want to keep an eye on the activity. There’s also free WiFi, plus snacks, drinks and baked goods from Sugar Fixe bakery for sale. Frequent visitors can get discounted 10-visit passes or monthly, all-access passes. If you want to throw a birthday party there, semi-private and private parties are available.
