Back-to-school shopping can make a serious dent in the pocketbook — the clothes, the backpacks … the everything else you never knew your kid always wanted. Good news: You can get them ready without dropping a ton of money by taking advantage of the deals at local consignment shops and resales. Cute fashions and gear abound. Biggest Cult Following: Babies, Tots n’ More Consignment Sale

The lowdown: This seasonal sale features a staggering array of consignment merchandise. More than 22,000 items were on offer during the last event in April.

The merch: A huge room is chock-a-block with gently used and new children’s and maternity items, including clothing, shoes, toys, games, baby gear and furniture.

The details: Prices are marked 50 to 80 percent below retail. No outside bags are permitted but large tote bags are provided. Admission and parking are free; cash and credit cards are accepted for purchases. First-time moms can shop early but must register in advance. This sale gets so packed that it’s recommended that shoppers don’t bring their kids.
