Happy coldest time of year! Not to fear — we found plenty of things to break you out of that icicle. This weekend’s indoor fun includes Family Day at the MCA, a huge travel and adventure expo, and a bubble show like no other. MCA Family Day
Color your world with hands-on art activities inspired by the vivid hues in the current exhibition, MCA DNA: Alexander Calder. Play with a broad spectrum of colors and media, and take your works of art home. Held Sat., 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Free for families with children 12 & under. Event details.
It’s the last weekend to get your thrill fill at this blowout, which has rides for all ages, including a 28-foot-tall zip line, a slippery snowflake slide and a brand new toddler obstacle course. There’s also an ice skating rink and holiday train that zig-zags through lighted houses and scenes. Held thru Sun. Admission is free; must buy wristband to participate in rides and activities. Every week is a new adventure at the longstanding improv show that lets kids choose the adventure unleashed on stage. Shout out suggestions, help shape the scene and enjoy as it all comes to life. Impromptu songs with live music keep things extra-silly. Held every Sat. at 10:30 a.m. Stage 773. $10 children 3-10 and their whole family. Event details.
Second Sundays at Hyde Park Art Center
Create wintery contact prints and dynamic animal-inspired finger puppets at the monthly family art event. It’s led by professional artists that make the process just as exciting as the final product. Held Sun., 1-4 p.m. Free. Event details.
Chicago Travel & Adventure Show
Dream about your next family vacation at this mega-expo, which has plenty of enticements for kids. Learn to scuba dive in a heated pool, meet “animal ambassadors” from SeaWorld, say hello to sled dogs, and enjoy live music and dancing from international presenters. Held Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m.-4 p.m. One-day adult admission, $10 online or $15 at the door; two-day adult admission, $16 online or $24 at the door; children under 16 are free. All ages. “Bubble-ologist” Geoff Akins’ show is full of laughs and surprises. As Akins creates some of the biggest and most interesting bubbles you’ve ever seen, he spins stories of life’s great lessons, including how to be confident.
