Mono County, California

If you want California cowboy history, head to Mono County in the beautiful Eastern Sierras, where you’ll find ghost towns including the historic Bodie, Convict Lake (where a posse of convicts from Carson City escaped to back in the 1800s, ending in a shootout) and Hot Creek, where True Grit was filmed. You can also check out Hunewill Ranch, a working ranch with thousands of acres for you to ride before you take supper in the Victorian dining hall.
