If your little one looks at a kid’s menu and picks the grilled cheese every…single…time, this newbie eatery will be their jam. GCDC (which stands for Grilled Cheese DC) opens this month, just one block from the White House, and will focus specifically on the comfort food, plus the sides and beverages that make it even yummier. Why grilled cheese? Why not!
Lunch is Served
Say you’re exploring the Corcoran Art Gallery, Renwick Gallery or Lafayette Square, and your and your little one’s hunger pangs start to kick in. GCDC may be the perfect pit stop. The eatery serves up atypical grilled cheese sandwiches for even the most discerning grown-up palate, plus a nostalgic original grilled cheese made from locally sourced cheddar cheese. Sandwiches will range from $8-12, and each will come with a small side of greens. The average sandwich is large enough to share between your smaller kiddos or with you and a friend.
Grilled Cheese 2.0
GCDC has hired their cheese monger away from New York City’s Saxelby Cheesemongers to prepare their menus and select the weekly specialty cheese. GCDC will feature more than 20 domestic and international cheeses (many coming from Righteous Cheese at Union Market) that will rotate in and out.
Wait, There’s More!
There isn’t a specific kids menu at GCDC, but who needs it when the main offering is already a major food fave for the under-10 set? The cheesy spot will also be offering the vegan and gluten free sandwiches and soups, including classic creamy tomato soup. Don’t leave without trying the tater tots, drizzled with different types of cheese (naturally!). Kids will love sharing the grilled cheese squares, smaller versions of the large sandwich that allows you to try multiple flavors on one plate. GCDC will offer about 10 beers and 10 wines, plus cocktails, that are meant to pair with some of the cheeses. (Sounds like the makings of a great date night!) Nonalcoholic offerings include Kona coffee, chocolate milk, and a Brooklyn-style egg cream.
