You’ve been waiting for the weekend to start since last weekend (ugh), so don’t let it pass you by in a we-just-laid-around-the-house blur. Make it memorable by checking out one of the cool events happening around the D.C. area. From a cherry blossom parade and a dance-filled family theater show to a kid-catering health fair and a zoo egg hunt, there’s plenty to get you (and the kids) psyched about going out and about.

Forward March! National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade
The Cherry Blossoms may be budding a little late this year, but the annual parade celebrating the pretty little blooms is still happening—rain or shine! If you’re coming with kids, arrive early (9-ish) to scope out and set up a viewing spot along the parade route. Little ones will appreciate the up-close look at the decorated floats, huge helium balloons, marching bands, clowns, horses, antique car. Sat., 10 am-12 pm. National Archives. Free. All. Event details.

Bookwarms Unite at the Bethesda Literary Festival
If kiddo is the type to sneak off at bedtime to read a book, this event is for her. The annual lit fest features a youth writing contest, a meet and greet with local children’s authors and fun, interactive story times. Sat.-Sun., 10 am. Downtown Bethesda. Free. All. Event details.

Feel the Vibe at “Once On the Island”
From the same folks who created Seussiccal comes this super-fun, Caribbean-flavor family musical about a young girl who learns lessons on love and prejudice. Full of island tunes and snappy dance numbers, your little theater hopper won’t be able to contain his toe-tapping. Fri.-Sun. Olney. 5 and up. Event details.

Northern Virginia

Dance and Nosh Nutritiously at a Kids Health Fair
Show kiddo how much fun being healthy really is at this annual health fair hosted by the Junior League of Northern Virginia. Kids can move and stretch in yoga and zumba demos, sample healthy snacks, and enter to win a sweet raffle prize pack. Parents can join in too, and will be able to get information about how to help their kids stay active and healthy! Sat., 9 am-1 pm. Arlington. Free. 3-12. Event details.

Zoo-Style Safari Easter Egg Hunt
There won’t be anything cuter than seeing your little tykes hanging out with the baby animals at the Reston Zoo. They’ll get to feed the baby lambs and bunnies before hopping on the safari wagon to a high-energy egg hunt. Of course, the Easter Bunny will be there too. Sat., 10 am-3 pm. Vienna. $2/under 2; $11.95/kids ages 2-12; $12.95/adults. All. Event details.

Boats, BBQ, and a Moon Bounce: Bay Bridge Boat Show
Kick off boating season around D.C. by scoping out a display of hundreds of new and late model boats. Come for the kayaks and canoes, and stay for all of the other fun, kid-friendly happenings on the docks—wood-fired pizza, face painting, a moon bounce, a boat safety course for kids, and fly-fishing demos. Your water babies will be in their element. Fri.-Sun., 10 am. Stevensville. $12/adults; $4/kids 7-12; free/kids under 6. All. Event details.
