Green is the color du jour this weekend. As the District ushers in St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll be hard pressed not to find a parade near your nabe or a restaurant that’s not serving some variation of corned beef and cabbage. There’s even a St. Patty’s Day ice skating session happening in Wheaton where you get a discount if you dress in green! If jade just isn’t your color, pack up the kids and head to a touch-a-truck fundraiser or a puppet show inspired by Amelia Earhart and her red airplane. But the shepherd’s pie and Bailey’s cheesecake? We wouldn’t pass those up if we were you.

Forward March: Saint Patrick’s Day Parade
Put on your favorite shade of green and head downtown to the 43rd installment of this yearly parade. The mile-long parade is right on the National Mall so you can enjoy the monuments as a backdrop. Sun., 12 pm. National Mall. Free. All. Event details.

Pop and Lock! Baby Loves Disco Family Dance Party
Baby Loves Disco, the original family dance party, has boogied back into the Beltway! Come dressed to impress (but comfy enough to shake the wiggles out). In addition to cutting a rug, kids can get their faces painted, make sock puppets, and get a faux tattoo or two. For all the non-driving moms and dads there’s a cash bar along with snacks and juice boxes for all! Sun., 11 am-1:30 pm. H Street Corridor. $18; $60/family of four. All. Event details.

Amelia and Her Big Red Plane, a Puppet Show
Kids get a glimpse into the life and times of Amelia Earhart through this interactive puppet show presented by the Smithsonian Discovery Theater. Plane-loving little ones will see Amelia build her own roller coaster, takes off in her first plane, and flies across the Atlantic. Fri. L’Enfant Plaza. Free. 5-10. Event details.

Junior Jams: Dave Brewer and the Pre-K Kings
Warning: You’ll be humming the tunes from this concert weeks after! Dave and his band are an all-dad, all rock-star act guaranteed to get your family jumping, and laughing, and singing out-loud along with old faves, and some great original material. Sat., 10:30 am-11:30 am. Kensington. $6. All. Event details.

St. Patrick’s Day Ice Skating
No green skates? No problem! Wear something else in the emerald family to score reduced admission at Wheaton Ice Arena during this special St. Patty’s Day ice skating session. While it might help save you from falling, you and the kids won’t need the Luck of the Irish to have a blast slipping and sliding around the rink.  Sun., 2:45 pm-4:45 pm. Wheaton. $6.50 (when you wear something green). All. Event details.

Northern Virginia

Beep, Beep! Touch-a-Truck Fundraiser
Kids get to sit in the driver’s seat of trucks in all kinds of shapes and sizes at Fort Hunt Preschool’s annual hands-on touch-a-truck event. Your mini-truck aficionado will press buttons, honk horns, and learn about all of the gizmos and gadgets on the vehicles they usually only see from a distance. Sat., 10 am-4 pm. Alexandria. $5. 2 and up. Event details.
