You don’t have to hang up those ice skates just yet. A handful of indoor rinks buzz all year long and one of the best ways to keep cool as temps start to rise is checking out an ice show. Shrek and his friends will be making their rounds this weekend, but if ice skating isn’t your thing, check out a cool art class, learn about fencing, or hit the Mall for an annual kite festival.

Laurel

Shrek On Ice
“Shrek on Ice” is presented by the Gardens Figure Skating Club of Laurel. Shrek is the story of the green ogre, who is living happily in solitary in the swamp until the Fairy Tale characters are exiled there by Lord Farquaad. In his travels with Donkey, he encounters a Dragon, travels to Duloc and meets Princess Fiona. Sat.-SunEvent details.

Takoma Park

Schools Out Art Program
Mini Picasso’s should bring in a box (shoe box, cigar box, or toaster sized) and (if desired) any of their own materials (beads, shells, bits of jewelry, baseball cards, small toys, family photos, etc.) in which to create an ‘assemblage.’ Participants will also be provided with a wide range of materials with which to create shadow box assemblages (feathers, buttons, paper etc.). Cool, right? FriEvent details.

Falls Church

Nova Fencing Club Open House
Try fencing at Nova Fencing Club for free at this open house featuring mini classes on foil, epee, and saber. There will also be live bouting demos between current club fencers. Sat. Event details.

National Mall

Pillow Fight!
It’s International Pillow Fight Day (for real!), so bring your cotton-filled plushes to the Washington Monument where friendly-fighters of all ages will be going at it. Organizers suggest families with small kiddos to play outside the main pillow crowd with other little ones. Sat. Event details.

Crystal City

Artomatic
This free art festival features a wide variety of paintings, sculpture, photography, music, theater, poetry, dance and workshops (in other words, enough to keep little eyes busy and engaged). The event is held every 12 to 18 months in a commercial site that is slated for demolition or is newly constructed and not yet occupied. Artomatic transforms the space into a playground for artistic expression. Participation is completely open-entry and there are no juries or curators. Fri.-SunEvent details.

National Mall

Blossom Kite Festival
The National Mall will be awash with kite fliers showing off their stunt skills during this annual event and competition. Sure, there will be experts from across the country doing fancy moves in the Kite Ballet and Hot Tricks Showdown, but there are also youth competitions that little ones can get in on at the Family Field. Swing by the activity tents to make a kite, decorate a wind sock, or score a free lesson from the Kite Doctor. SatEvent details.
