It’s starting to feel a lot like fall! This weekend officially kicks off pumpkin picking (find our favorite place here). Not ready to give up on summer yet? The Czech Embassy is celebrating the summer Olympics with games and activities on their lawn (free to attend!). There is more free fun at Lincoln’s Cottage where kids can ride a pony on Lincoln’s lawn or make their own top hat. Read on for more events to fill your weekend.
Cars at the Capital
During the month of Sep. check out the latest inductees of the National Historic Vehicle Register on the National Mall (this exhibit is located between the National Gallery of Art and the National Air & Space Museum). This exhibit changes weekly; this weekend catch the first passenger Dursenberg, a sleek, 3-speed manual vehicle from 1921. Fri.-Sun. Event details.
A Comedy Percussion Show
Buckets N Boards is a high-energy comedy percussion show that is equal parts music and humor. The intricate beats, ridiculous songs, tap dancing and stunning synchronicity combined with the variety of instruments and found objects that they manipulate is unlike any other show. Sat. Event details.
Family Fun at Lincoln’s Cottage
Create a top hat like Lincoln’s, ride a pony on Lincoln’s front lawn or take a tour of the President’s seasonal retreat. The day kicks off with a Freedom 5K in celebration of Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation, filled with a morning and afternoon of free, family-friendly activities. Sat. Event details.
The Czech Embassy’s Olympic Village
Share the excitement of the Olympics by learning about the Czech Olympic Team and its individual athletes’ medals. In the true spirit of games, participate in sport activities such as soccer darts, basketball shootouts, racket battles, moon bounce and more on the Embassy’s grounds. Join in on a fun-filled day of live music, a beer garden and food, activities for kids and participants in the spirit of the Olympics. Sat. Event details.
A Roaring Good Time at Dinosaur Park
Open just twice a month, Dinosaur Park is home to an unbelievably large number of fossils still in the ground. Better yet, young archeologists get to dig themselves. If you dig up a rare fossil it is cataloged with your name and you could possibly see your name in a museum one day! Dinosaur park also has a playground that is, of course, dinosaur themed. Sat. Event details.
Mommy & Me Archery
Whether you are a novice, or you shoot better than Robin Hood, this class is for parents and their children interested in the sport of archery. It is a really FUN way for boys and girls to learn about archery in a positive learning environment. Sat. Event details.
Pick a Pumpkin
This weekend officially starts pumpkin picking season at a number of area farms. We’ve rounded up the best places to grab a gourd off the vine. Bonus: a number of these farms host simultaneous fall festivals so you can spend the day feeding the chickens, getting lost in a corn maze and taking a tour on a tractor or hayride. Sun. Event details.
