Some say it’s second only to the Mission in terms of sunlight received, so North Beach is a toasty place to be, especially when the rest of the city is shrouded in Lady Fog. NB is host to an armful of kid-friendly entertainment: check out the curves on Lombard Street and try to stay out of someone’s picture; check out Destination Art‘s Saturday morning classes where your littles can express their innards or do a few laps in the pool at the rec center (Columbus and Lombard streets). If it’s more of a lie-in-the-park kind of day, head to Washington Square where the sun is always shining. At Columbus and Vallejo, Molinari’s Deli makes a sandwich worth their ever-present line. Washington Square is a great sandwich-eating destination.. Or slip into Café Divine for pizza, a salad, and some people-watching. Two shops up Union Street is a gelato place that does okay, but up Russian Hill on Union Street is Swenson’s, the hallmark of ice cream in the city. It¹s a big hill but the calorie burn merits you a waffle cone.
Bonus: this Saturday and Sunday the North Beach Festival descends on this friendly, sunny hood. Vendors, food, and music music music. Good for a turn in the morning, but watch the crowd swell in the afternoon. Check out the chalk art and bring Fido for the animal blessings.
