The CW’s Supergirl recently unveiled plans to bring the first transgender superhero to its cast of characters. Last weekend’s Comic-Con brought plenty of announcements—and this was one of the biggest (and best received) of them all!

The character, Nia Nal, is coming to the show for its fourth season. Played by transgender activist and actress Nicole Maines, Nia Nal will be a new reporter at CatCo who is taken under the wing of none other than Supergirl herself (a.k.a. Kara Danvers).

Maines first stepped into the spotlight in 2014 when she became a teen champion for the trans community. After suing (and successfully so) her school district in Orono, Maine to use the girl’s restroom, she became the focus of the book Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family. But that wasn’t all. Maines’ story was also included in the HBO documentary The Trans List.

Nia Nal isn’t the first transgender character in the comic world: that title belongs to Batgirl’s BFF Alysia Yeoh, a trans woman. Even so, this is a first for Supergirl and the TV network. It’s also a first when it comes to openly transgender actors and actresses playing openly transgender characters on network TV.
