A fun-filled birthday party with music, storytime, and cookies–where kids get excited about giving their gifts away? This was the dream when LA mom Meredith Alexander founded her charity Milk and Bookies. It’s now easy to make it a reality for your own family: combining the fun of a birthday party with the joy of helping others.
The Milk and Bookies charity has based its business model around teaching kids the simple lesson that giving back can be fun. This nonprofit hosts events where kids are able to select, purchase, and inscribe books to be donated to kids who do not have access to books of their own, and then celebrate with stories, music, and (obviously!) milk and cookies. Milk and Bookies aims to expose youngsters to the experience of giving, and inspire a lifelong awareness of the less fortunate, all while having a good time.
So consider throwing your kid a Milk and Bookies themed birthday party this year, where instead of a receiving a couple dozen new plastic toys, he and his friends can learn what it feels like to help out kids just like themselves. The Milk and Bookies website has easy instructions on how to create a great giving experience, tips on throwing fun a fun storybook-themed party, and the option to order a “Bookies Box,” filled with all of the materials you will need, like bookplates, “I Donated” stickers, and bookmarks. A Milk and Bookies event can be a great way to open the conversation about helping others and loving books. Sounds like a happy ending to us!
