Many celebrities are fiercely protective when it comes to sharing pictures of their kids with the public—and rightly so. Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry is known for her on-going battle against the paparazzi, which is why fans were very surprised to see a picture of Halle Berry’s son on her Instagram feed recently. The actress explained her decision via her IG post and it’s an important conversation for all parents to consider.

Celebrities make a choice to spend their lives in the spotlight, but their kids arguably do not. Many celebrities like Berryhave fought to keep their kids away from the prying lenses of the paparazzi and maintain a private life; Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis come to mind. This struggle is not unlike the one many parents face when it comes to deciding whether or not to share photos of their kids via social media.

Berry made waves when she shared an Instagram pic of four-year-old son Maceo from their recent family vacation in Bora Bora. The actress sat down with Extra and explained both her choice and the challenges of parenting in the social media age.

“That was a struggle,” Berry told Extra. “I really don’t like to show my kids very much…but I do realize…my people are, like, solid for me and me for them and I feel like I want to include them.”

Although Berry is very careful about posting pictures of her kids online, this isn’t the first time she has. In 2016, she posted a picture of her two kids—but with their faces cropped out. After a critic accused her of being ashamed of her kids, the actress gave the perfect response.

“I try to find creative ways to incorporate them into my feed because they are the biggest part of my life, but I also work very hard to keep their identities as private as I can considering they are only children,” Berry wrote in a comment.

“It’s my belief, and I’m not criticizing others who have different beliefs, that it’s my job as their mother to protect their privacy as best I can. When they grow and they’re of age and they want [to] share their images on the internet, that will be for them to decide, not me.”

Ultimately kids can’t manage their own privacy until they are older, so it’s up to parents to decide what is best for their families.
