This week’s tip: DON’T Buy that Thing that You REALLY REALLY REALLY Want

There is often a big discrepancy between the way we think we’ll feel when we own something and the way we actually feel when we have it.

I call this the “puppy in the window” problem: How many people do you know who have gotten dogs thinking that the pooch will make them happy, only to find out that they don’t have the time to care for it? Their experience of having a dog turns out to be really different than how they imagined it would be.

This is because our emotional desire for something new (often whipped into a frenzy by advertisers) can easily short-circuit our better judgment about something–that rational part of our brain.

Today, skip the “buyer’s remorse” and avoid making a purchase.
