Ab and Sam under RS sign

In today’s age of constant screentime, every parent has experienced the worry that what their kids are watching isn’t appropriate, useful, or enriching. Thanks to the folks at The Mother Company, screentime concerns are becoming old news and parents are connecting as a community. A phenomenal parenting tool, The Mother Company’s production arm, Ruby’s Studio, offers thoughtfully-made programming for kids that includes videos, books, and apps that model good behavior and achieve a fun balance of entertainment and education. This year, The Mother Company’s program The Friendship Show was your Totally Awesome pick for best kids flick. Founder and CEO, Abbie Schiller, and President, Samantha Kurtzman-Counter, recently took the time to chat with us about the inspiration behind The Mother Company, their most recent show, and more. Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do your customers value most about your business?

Abbie Schiller & Samantha Kurtzman-Counter: Customers value how we make really large topics child-size and arm their kids with tools to use in everyday life. As a parent, talking to your child about frustration, the golden rule, or resolving conflicts with friends can be tough, but the Ruby’s Studio series really breaks things down into fun, memorable pieces children can use (or parents can remind them to use) when faced with difficult situations.

RT: What inspired you to start your business?

AS/SKC: Like many parents, we were disappointed with today’s children’s entertainment options. After a closer look, we realized there were plenty of shows teaching ABCs and 123s, but nothing out there taught kids about their feelings and emotions, which is a hugely important factor in raising children to become healthy, well-adjusted adults. So, we started building a show both parents and children would adore. With two shows under our belt, addressing the topics of friendship and feelings, we are excited to launch our third this October: Ruby’s Studio: The Safety Show. This fun, engaging video is full of helpful tools to build skills for staying safe in the modern world.

RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?

AS/SKC: Don’t think you need to hold all your meetings in a conference room – go to where your market is. When we was trying to find investors for The Mother Company, we would approach parents at the playground, ballet class, etc. With an iPad, you can have your presentation ready to show interested parties anywhere!

RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?

AS/SKC: Though your business may feel like another child, it isn’t. Don’t get too caught up in work and be sure to make time to spend with your kids without any interruptions (read: powerdown!). Schedule this time in your calendar if need be.

RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?

AS/SKC: Winning awards like this is close to the top of the list, but we’d say hearing from parents about the positive effect The Mother Company and Ruby’s Studio products have had on their children makes us the most proud as a business owner.

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?

AS/SKC: Red Tricycle readers can use the code “Ruby20” for 20% off their purchase at www.RubysStudio.com
