The Honest Company is re-defining the “family brand” in a totally awesome way, so it’s more than appropriate that it’s your Totally Awesome pick for best baby and kids skincare products. The company was co-founded by super-mom Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan with the mission of supplying products that are unquestionably safe, eco-friendly, beautiful, convenient, and affordable. With The Honest Company, you’ll find cleaning products, diapers, lotions, and much more, plus a sweet passion for social consciousness.

Christopher recently took the time to chat with us about what makes The Honest Company so awesome, the inspiration behind it all, and more. Read on:

Red Tricycle: Congratulations! Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome.” What do you think your customers value most about your business?

Christopher Gavigan: Our customers are modern, savvy, and busy people—they don’t want vague or questionable ingredients, “green washed” products that falsely promise to be natural, or expensive solutions that don’t work. So, it’s our mission to create a trusted suite of safe, non-toxic, and effective baby, personal care, cleaning, and health & wellness products. I believe our community truly loves that we deliver a worry-free and convenient shopping experience, where they can find everyday essentials free of parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates, dyes, fragrances, and other harsh, synthetic chemicals. Peace of mind is invaluable for any and all parents!

RT: What inspired you to start your business?

CG: Prior to co-founding The Honest Company, my career focused on protecting and improving children’s health and development. As part of that work and as the former CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World, I advocated for legislative change in our outdated chemical regulatory system and championed new standards for businesses so customers could have safer products available for their families. Despite the amazing efforts of organizations leading the charge against toxic chemicals—like Healthy Child Healthy World, EWG, and Safer Chemicals Healthy Families—the government has yet to pass meaningful reform. Frustrated by this and knowing the ever-present need of parents seeking safer and healthier options, I knew I needed to do something different to spearhead change in the products industry. I knew The Honest Company needed to exist. Our goal is to redefine the family brand by providing safe everyday essentials for families everywhere, while inspiring people, companies, and even governments to make impactful decisions related to social goodness, environmental protection, and mindful workplace practices.

RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?

CG: When I considered starting my own business, there were so many conflicting voices in my head. My advice is to know your true mission and purpose and listen to that one — if you follow your gut, you can’t go wrong.

RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?

CG: Although it often seems impossible to squeeze more out of the day, carve out personal time. It’s very important to take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. By making health a priority, you can be present and available whether you’re at work or home with your family. Yoga and paddle boarding are my saving grace.

RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?

CG: I’m most proud when I walk in the door every day and see the pure happiness and delight of my three children — it lights up my world, even on the hardest and longest days.

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?

CG: Red Tricycle readers can enjoy $10 off a minimum purchase of $40 using the code TriHonest. Limited to first-time orders only (one coupon per customer). Expires September 30, 2013.
