Let’s face it: as busy parents, it’s nice to be able to take advantage of escapes that remind us of the world at large and let us indulge in fashion, candid parenting talk, and more. That’s why Mini Magazine is something of a lifesaving (digital) read—and your Totally Awesome pick for best kid and parent magazine. Katilyn Kirby, the Founder and Editor in Chief, recently took the time to chat with us about the spirit of Mini Magazine, what it takes to be a mom mogul, and more. Read on:
Red Tricycle: Congratulations! Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome.” What do think your customers value most about your business?
Kaitlyn Kirby: Our readers love a digital read with the latest in parenting products, fashion and style for Mom, Dad, and Minis, and celebrity parent interviews in Q&A format that allow them to enjoy the articles without demanding too much time.
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
KK: Mini was created to fill the Cookie-sized hole left after the closing of Conde Nast’s beloved Cookie Magazine. No other parenting publications seemed to compare and we were ready to bring style-centered content to modern parents once again.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
KK: Get going! Getting started is the hardest part of building a brand. There are so many decisions and steps and paperwork and obstacles that demand your time and can really break you before you’re ready to launch. But keep your eye on the goal and on your vision— this is the hardest part and right now, you just have to jump.
RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?
KK: Coffee. Just kidding! (Sort of.) There has never been a better time for entrepreneurship than right now for parents. We love that so many parents are building family-focused companies and doing something they’re passionate about— we are too! Our greatest tip would be to leave work at work. Give yourself office hours and do your best to stick to them. When work is over for the day, it’s time to just be Mom or Dad. No more answering emails or talking business. Until tomorrow.
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?
KK: Recently, winning a Red Tricycle award for Best Parenting & Baby Magazine! We love what we do and it’s so rewarding to see our readers appreciate it too. We really love to read all of our readers’ feedback with every issue. Every issue unlocks a new proud moment as we gain more readers, hear your favorite parts of our digital mag, and encounter more chic parents sharing the Mini love.
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
KK: Have a look at our new fall issue, FREE, with cover mom Soleil Moon Frye— www.mini-magazine.com/issue.
