You know how there are New Yorkers who have never been to the top of the Empire State Building? Don’t raise the L.A. version of that kid! With so much to do here, and traffic being, well, LA traffic, it’s easy to miss a few “gottas.” So, check our bucket list of the 10 things all kids growing up in Los Angeles should experience, and see what you can cross off — and where you should be heading this weekend.

Get Sticky at the Tar Pits

Make a prehistoric pit stop at the La Brea Tar Pits – one of the world’s most famous active excavation sites. Discover more than meets the eye as fossils dating back 40,000 years lurk just beneath the surface of the sticky stuff. Mini explorers are fascinated by the life sized mammoth family that’s stuck in the lake of tar and ongoing active excavation areas where you can see paleontologists at work. Bring the kids in old playclothes, as half the fun of coming here is to finding a big stick and poking in the pockets of tar that bubble up through the grass. Then finish off the tar stains with grass stains as you roll down the hill on the side of the Page Museum, which houses many of the animal fossils that were found in the pit.
