Educated Nannies

We all know education is important for growing kiddos–but it can also be the extra something that pushes a nanny into rockstar status. That’s the genius behind Educated Nannies, a local business that provides L.A. families with college-educated professional nannies, tutors, personal assistants and homeschool teachers. This ultra-handy resource understands that an educated, qualified nanny can make all the difference. Is it any wonder, then, that it was your Totally Awesome pick for best childcare agency?

Educated Nannies founder Ryan Jordan recently took the time to chat with us about the inspiration behind her business, her proudest moments, and more. Read on:

Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?

Ryan Jordan: Our clients value our personalized approach to childcare. Educated Nannies is the only nanny agency in Los Angeles that offers nannies who have college degrees, five years of childcare experience, CPR and First Aid certifications and they must submit to extensive background checks including fingerprinting. We interview all of our nannies in person and we conduct home visits with our clients to learn more about the culture of their home environment and childcare philosophies. We work with each family’s budget to meet their needs, and we are extremely selective of who we send to their home for interviews. We take a daunting process and make it more comfortable.

After we place the nanny, we follow up with the family every few months to offer guidance and answer any questions. We are in constant contact with our nannies to offer educational tips and support.

RT: What inspired you to start your business?

RJ: I have such a passion for children and education! My nickname was “The Educated Nanny” and I spent 10 years as a nanny and teacher. When I received my master’s degree in education, I felt so much more equipped with knowledge of child development and I wanted to spread this information to as many families and childcare providers that I could reach.

After referring many families and nannies to other agencies, I realized Los Angeles needed a nanny agency with college-educated nannies. Nannies who are not pursuing any other career, and have a passion for childcare. Los Angeles needed an agency that was properly background checking their nannies according to California law. After speaking with parents, I learned there was a great need for educated nannies who can not only care for children, but also teach, tutor, inspire and act as role models. So, I made my dreams into a reality and decided that need was greater than anything else that mattered in my life. At the end of the day, the children and their safety inspired me. Those “aha moments” when a child learns something new are magical. It’s all about the kids!

RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?

RJ: Be prepared to put your heart, soul and every ounce of energy you have into your first year of business. This is a 24/7 adventure filled with passion. Be brave. Be creative. Be okay with not getting everything perfect on the first try. Hire your weakness. Overall, have fun and soak up every bit of information you can. Network and communicate with people that inspire you. Oh, and hire a good lawyer and web designer!

RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner or parent?

RJ: It is hard to pinpoint just one proud moment. I am so proud of my nannies. Every time I receive a phone call or email from a parent complimenting their nanny and their set of skills or the way they care for their child, I beam with joy. When I receive a text message with a picture of the nanny creating a project with a smiling child, my heart melts. When I receive a phone call from a parent requesting childcare, I am honored they chose us and trust us. There are so many opportunities to be filled with gratitude in this business. Personally, I am proud that we earned the Red Tricycle Award and for being nominated for the LA Business Journal’s Women Making a Difference Award.

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?

RJ: Yes! We offer full-time and part-time nannies as well as temp and on-call babysitters. Please mention Red Tricycle to receive a $100 credit towards our nanny referral fee or a $25 credit towards our babysitting membership.
