When it comes to nabbing the perfect keepsake photo of your family, you know what you want—a photographer who knows how to capture your kiddo’s personality, who can create a fun and comfortable experience, who understands that a great photo shows heart. You’ll get all that and more with Original Kids by Tanya Alexis—your Totally Awesome pick for best family photographer in Los Angeles.
Tanya recently took the time to chat with us about what makes her photography so awesome (no props or fake lit studio!), her advice for aspiring business owners (patience!), and more. Read on:
Red Tricycle: Congratulations on being voted “Most Awesome” by your community! What do you think your customers value most about your business?
Tanya Alexis: Clients value the fact that their session is tailored specifically to their family. Portrait photography requires complete trust in the person that you are inviting into your home, your world. When clients contact me, we spend about 10 to 15 minutes on the phone, if the little ones allow. They tell me about their family, how they interact with each other, who they are.
RT: What inspired you to start your business?
TA: Photography has always been a source of constant joy. About five years ago, I met 5 different female photographers (in the span of about a month). They all did different types of photography, but the one constant was that they were all making a living as a photographer. It made me realize that I could do that too.
RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?
TA: Patience. Patience. Networking. Patience. Ask for feedback from clients and peers. People will usually be honest with you; especially if you let them know that you want and value their opinion.
For photographers, if you don’t come from a business background, take the time to learn basic business principles. This will help you properly set up your pricing and your business. It will also help you create a strong foundation from which you can grow from.
RT: What is your proudest moment as a business owner?
TA: Oh man, that is a hard one. I am not sure that I have just one or that I would say it is a matter of being proud. But every time a client invites me into their world to photograph their family (whether it is for the first time or the fifth) I am completely honored to be trusted with their family’s history.
RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?
TA: Yes—mention Red Tricycle when you inquire about a session and receive $50 off your session fee!
