Look, up in the sky. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a…slide? Now open at the iconic US Bank Tower downtown is OUE Skyspace LA—California’s tallest open-air observation deck and Skyslide—a 45-foot long outdoor glass slide attached to the exterior (yes, exterior) of the building 1,000 feet above the hustle and bustle of the city. If your tots scramble for the tallest slide at the playground (or you’re a sucker for insanely amazing photo ops), this new spot is calling your name. Loudly.
Oh, What a View: The OUE Skyspace LA observation deck welcomes all ages, making it a super fun outing to do with the family or when you have thrill-seeking visitors in from out of town. Timed tickets are available at the box office, but we highly recommend purchasing beforehand online, especially given the crazy popularity of the brand new attraction. When you arrive at the US Bank Tower, you’ll check in at customer service and go through security. If you have a stroller, we suggest leaving it in your car. However, if you do bring it inside, it can be stored free of charge at the customer service desk. After you pass through security, you’ll board the golden elevator for a brisk ride up to the 54th floor, then transfer to another elevator that will take you to the 69th & 70th-floor observation deck levels.
Once you reach the top, you’ll step out into a light-filled, modern oasis boasting incredible 360-degree views of the city at every turn; the most breathtaking we’ve seen from any spot in LA. There are plenty of comfy places to sit, relax and soak in the scenery. Snacks and beverages are available for purchase as well, keeping hangry toddlers happy. And those all-important restrooms are located on both floors should any potty-related whining arise.
The 69th floor is home to the open-air observation deck. Munchkins will love looking through mounted telescopes to track down their favorite LA landmarks. And you’ll realize just how high up you are when you spot helicopters zipping around you through the sky below. Yikes!
Slip Slidin’ Away: Now, let’s get to the nitty-gritty: the Skyslide! Mounted on the exterior of the US Bank Tower 1,000 feet above downtown, this revolutionary glass slide whisks riders from the 70th floor down to the 69th-floor observation deck outside. During the ride, guests sit on top of mats that protect the glass and provide an extra kick in the pants speed wise. Now, you’re probably asking yourself why anyone in their right mind would ever do this? One word—FUN! We promise the anticipation is way more terrifying than the actual ride going down. (But speaking of “down,” don’t look in that direction.)
All ages may ride the slide. Tiny tots or kiddos who are a little hesitant to ride alone are more than welcome to ride with mom or dad. Be forewarned though, the slide dumps you out onto a cushy mat at the bottom, so plan accordingly if there are two of you. And kids (or parents) with a fear of heights will not enjoy this one little bit. Let them enjoy the observations decks and waiting for thrill seekers at the bottom.
To ride, guests must purchase an observation deck level ticket, as well as a separate Skyslide ticket which runs $8 per ride. You may ride as many times as your heart (and stomach) desires, but know it’s an additional fee every time. And so you have proof of your valiant conquest, photos are snapped of each rider and are available for purchase at the photo desk.
Interactive Experience: Before your visit to OUE Skyspace LA comes to an end, be sure to swing by the digital interactive level (included in the cost of admission) for some super cool exhibits sure to leave kiddos in awe. A digital topography wall showcases giant moving images of LA’s most famous landmarks and coolest neighborhoods. There’s also an infinity mirror which casts reflections upon reflections upon reflections, as well as a silhouette wall that uses pixels to create reflective images based on body movement. Be prepared to spend quite a few minutes checking this area out, kids will find plenty here to entertain themselves.
This is an amazing experience for thrill seekers and photo ops. But even if you or your wee ones aren’t into the excitement of the experience, or get butterflies with heights, the observation deck and interactive experience are well worth the visit.
