Once every 4 years it’s time to curl up on the couch and watch some serious athletes compete in the winter games.  Whether you prefer the speed (and slight ludicrousness) of the luge, the grace of the figure skaters or the fearlessness of the snowboarders, it’s all spectacular for family viewing.  But you and your Bode Miller, Shaun White or Gracie Gold wanna-bes can also get out and get a little Olympic action (and history) of your own, even in sunny SoCal…

Glide, Baby, Glide

During the winter holidays, outdoor ice rinks sprout like weeds for that holiday feel. But with Christmas a mere memory, those rinks have packed it in for another year. Luckily, we have a few fabulous year round rinks, where your little Kristi Yamaguchi or Gracie Gold can practice her triple Salchow. Our top pick is the Pasadena Ice Skating Center, because they cover our big two “C’s” – classes and cleanliness. Before you head out, be sure to check the website or call for open skate hours.

One last fun fact: Los Angeles has hosted the Olympics twice and both times it was by default, as no other city bid to host either the 1932 or 1984 games.
